Distinction created in 1948 to reward seniority and quality of services performed in one or more employers by an employee or similar person of honor medal replaces the Labour Medal of Honour of the Ministry of Trade and Industry ( 1886), the medal of honor of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (1913) also called Medal of Honour of Old Servants. There are four levels (silver, vermeil, gold, grand gold).

The Order of Merit for Labour, French order established in 1957 to reward those who distinguished themselves by their professional value, duration and quality of their services was abolished on 1 January 1964 in the creation of the National Order of Merit .

The statistics relating to the award of the Medal of Honour of work for ten years, show a clear trend discounts following the implementation of the Decree of 4 July 1984 on the number of employers.

Before the above Decree, the annual volume was around 150,000 medals in 1985 to reach the highest amount of 585,820 medals and stabilize since around 300,000 medals per year.

This figure is relatively modest even if we take into account that many employees, because of their profession or their employer, can apply to other honors awarded for service seniority by a department other than the Ministry of Labour (Academic Palms, Agricultural Merit, maritime Merit Medal Ministerial honor Medal of Railways, Road Transport Medal, etc.).
